Comprehensive Guide to Health Insurance, Primary Medical Care, and Home Health Services
Having the right health insurance in place is important. Not only do you need the right coverage at an affordable rate, but also access to the healthcare providers you trust for the services you and your family need. There is much to consider in selecting a health insurance plan. In addition to the cost of the coverage and the providers on the plan, you will also want to consider the details of copays, deductibles, and coinsurance.
Understanding Insurance Costs
Many different factors will impact what you pay for health insurance. Generally, the more you pay in monthly premiums, the higher the percentage of your medical costs your health insurance plan will cover. To better understand your plan, consider the following definitions based on standard insurance practices:
| Term | Definition |
| Copay | The copay (copayment) is the flat fee you pay every time you go to the doctor or fill a prescription. |
| Deductible | The deductible is the amount you pay every year in eligible medical services and medications before your insurance plan goes into effect. |
| Coinsurance | Coinsurance is the portion of your medical costs you are required to pay after your deductible is met and your plan kicks in. |
Many plans pay 100% for preventative care and annual checkups. If your deductible is $500, you pay $500 out of pocket in eligible medical costs before insurance payments start. For example, if your coinsurance is 20%, you pay 20% of your eligible medical expenses, and your insurance company pays the remaining 80%.
Quality Primary Medical Care
It is difficult to find decent primary care without having to wait for months to be seen. If you’re looking for a kind and compassionate doctor who takes time to get to know you, who makes decisions WITH you on what’s best for YOUR health, then I recommend finding a provider who is attentive to your needs and takes time listening to your concerns. A dedicated medical team cares about your physical and mental wellbeing and works hard to make sure they figure out what has been going on with your health.
For many patients, the preference is a clinic that also has a patient portal so that you can access your information as soon as it is available. Quality clinics are fairly affordable if paying out of pocket and accept various types of insurances. This is also a preferred place to have labs drawn, where they take great care to make you as comfortable as possible.
