Planned Parenthood Reproductive Health Care and Abortion Access Expansion
Planned Parenthood Great Rivers (formerly Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri) is the leading provider, educator, and protector of sexual and reproductive health care in the St. Louis region, Missouri Ozarks, and beyond, as it has been for more than 90 years. We provide high-quality, convenient health care for all genders. We're here for you — with or without insurance.
Clinical Services and Abortion Access
In Missouri, you can now access procedural abortion at several Planned Parenthood health centers: in St. Louis at our Central West End health center or through Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood Great Plains at Midtown KC and Columbia health centers. In Illinois’ Metro East region — just across the river from St. Louis — you can get an abortion at our Fairview Heights health center or in Granite City at Hope Clinic.
Need transportation, lodging, or financial assistance in order to access abortion at Planned Parenthood Great Rivers or Hope Clinic? The Regional Logistics Center (RLC) can help. Call the RLC at 618-607-5080.
New Telehealth Abortion Services in Kansas
A Kansas clinic is offering abortion pills prescribed by out-of-state doctors after court ruling. A Wichita Planned Parenthood began connecting abortion patients with out-of-state doctors in a bid to increase appointment availability. It comes after a judge struck down a state law banning telemedicine abortions. Those new telehealth abortion services started Monday and come less than a month after a pivotal court ruling that blocked a state law banning doctors from prescribing abortion-inducing medication remotely. It marks the first time the service has been available in Kansas in several years.
Planned Parenthood Great Plains, which operates three Kansas clinics, said telehealth appointments with out-of-state doctors will enable them to see more patients. Previously, the Wichita clinic only offered abortion appointments up to a few days per week and primarily relied on flying in doctors from out of town because of a shortage of local physicians willing to handle abortion cases. Now, Planned Parenthood Great Plains President and CEO Emily Wales said she hopes that turns into five days per week with the telehealth appointments.
Patient Requirements and Care
Patients still must visit the Wichita clinic in-person, where they’ll receive an evaluation, education and state-mandated counseling from local clinicians before meeting with an offsite doctor. “We can now see patients we might not otherwise have been able to treat,” said Chief Medical Officer Iman Alsaden. “It’s an important step in expanding access in a state like Kansas that has proven it values every person’s ability to make their own health care decisions.”
