Planned Parenthood to move Buffalo clinic to Horizon Health site, expand abortion services
Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York is working on a deal to acquire Horizon Health's E. Amherst Street site. The deal will see the agency move to a smaller site, but allow an expansion of surgical abortion services in Buffalo. In a similar expansion of reproductive health services, the city is expanding medication abortion services in Brooklyn in the wake of recent clinic closures and the ongoing contraction of reproductive care nationally.
Expanding Access in New York City
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will offer free and low-cost abortions at its sexual health clinic in Fort Greene, the fourth city-run site to provide the service. The expansion at the clinics, which primarily serve uninsured Black and Latino residents in high-poverty neighborhoods, comes as states around the country restrict access to abortions in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. Since it first began providing abortions at its Morrisania clinic in 2023, the three sites that have offered them – in Jamaica, Central Harlem and Morrisania – have served more than 2,300 patients seeking abortions, most of whom are Black or Latino and uninsured. The budget for abortion services at the clinic is $1.8 million a year, according to Health Department spokeswoman Chantal Gomez.
The Role of the Abortion Access Hub
The city has become a destination for out-of-state residents seeking abortions after states began banning or severely restricting access to care. The city’s Abortion Access Hub, a hotline with a $580,000 budget that connects individuals with licensed abortion providers in the five boroughs, reached more than 8,500 in its first two years in operation. A quarter of those callers were from out of state, mostly from Texas, Florida and Georgia, all of which have imposed strict abortion laws.
Comprehensive Care at Femi-Care Surgery Center
Femi-Care Surgery Center serves women from all across Maryland, including patients traveling from Gwynn Oak, MD. We’re not just an abortion clinic, we’re a place where women can receive straightforward, supportive, expert care without unnecessary travel or complications. When you’re facing a decision about pregnancy, everything feels heavier, but we offer safe, compassionate, and confidential care. Our clinical options include:
- The Abortion Pill (Up to 11 Weeks): For those in the earliest stages of pregnancy, the abortion pill is a safe, non-surgical option. It’s a two-step process: the first medication stops the pregnancy from progressing, and the second helps the body pass the pregnancy tissue naturally at home.
- 1-Day Surgical Abortion (5 to 18 Weeks): If you’re between 5 and 18 weeks pregnant, this procedure can typically be completed in one visit. It’s done by a licensed provider in a clean, quiet room.
- 2-Day Surgical Abortion (18 to 22.6 Weeks): For pregnancies later in the second trimester, we offer a two-day procedure that prioritizes your safety and comfort. These are usually recommended for those between 18 and 22.6 weeks pregnant.
