Comprehensive Resources for Abortion Advocacy, Spiritual Support, and Emotional Recovery
Texans of different races, ages, and genders are coming together through the Texas Abortion Advocacy Network (TAAN) to restore and expand abortion access for everybody in our state. TAAN helps communities advocating for reproductive justice build a strong, united network. Through these efforts, TAAN fosters collaboration and empowers advocates to make a tangible impact.
Advocacy and Community Organizing
TAAN members are actively organizing against local abortion travel bans, mobilizing their communities in support of abortion access, and volunteering with abortion funds across Texas. They also start conversations with city and county governments about alleviating the current health care crisis caused by Texas’ total abortion ban. To achieve these goals, advocates engage in several key activities:
- Get trained through the TAAN Academy, an expert-led online course designed to equip Texans with the tools to advocate in our communities.
- Make local change by advocating at city council meetings, educating our peers, and more.
- Contribute to a statewide network of advocates working together to advance abortion access in Texas.
- Distribute reproductive health kits to those in need.
The network is comprised of numerous dedicated organizations working in tandem:

| ACLU of Texas | Advocacy Partner |
| AFIYA Center | Advocacy Partner |
| Frontera Fund | Advocacy Partner |
| Planned Parenthood Texas Votes | Advocacy Partner |

Faith-Based Perspectives and Spiritual Care
Beyond political advocacy, many people find strength through spiritual communities. We are a community of faithful and spiritual people who are committed to the sacred task of dismantling and healing religiously-based abortion stigma and shame. We believe that people of faith protect the freedom to access reproductive care. The practice of blessing abortion clinics is central to this work because it speaks to a core mission: dismantling and healing religiously-fueled stigma around our reproductive lives.
For those seeking deeper integration of faith and justice, several resources are available:
- Interfaith training: We offer training for clergy, chaplains, and ministry professionals to provide judgment-free emotional and spiritual support.
- Learning Center: Provides robust academic training for those seeking to empower their activism with further education.
- Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Freedom: Provides multi-faith fellowship for students to integrate their spirituality with their pursuit for reproductive justice.
Emotional Recovery and Mental Health
Abortion is a deeply personal decision that can impact both your physical and emotional well-being. Emotional recovery after an abortion is just as crucial as physical healing. Whether you’re navigating relief, sadness, guilt, or a mixture of emotions, know that you are not alone. Research shows that some women experience mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress symptoms following an abortion. Others may struggle with grief, anger, or a deep sense of loss.
Key Emotional Challenges After Abortion
Whatever you feel is part of your unique healing journey. Common experiences include:
- Sadness or Grief: Mourning the loss can manifest in sadness.
- Anxiety: Worrying about the future or questioning past decisions.
- Guilt and Shame: Internal conflicts about the decision.
- Relief: Feeling that a difficult situation was resolved.
- Isolation: Believing that others won’t understand your experience.
The Role of Professional and Community Support
One of the most powerful resources you can tap into is connection. Sharing your experience with trusted friends, family members, or support groups can help lighten your emotional burden. Sometimes just voicing your feelings out loud can bring immense relief. While support from loved ones is invaluable, working with a mental health professional can offer deeper healing. Counselors and therapists who specialize in post-abortion recovery can help you navigate complex emotions and provide personalized coping strategies.
Practical Self-Care for Healing
Self-care plays a vital role in emotional recovery. Practicing self-kindness and engaging in activities you enjoy can foster resilience. Consider these actions:
- Reconnect with Hobbies: Engaging in activities that bring you joy—such as painting, hiking, reading, cooking, or gardening—can ground you.
- Prioritize Physical Health: Ensure you are eating nourishing foods, staying hydrated, resting adequately, and engaging in gentle exercise.
- Practice Journaling: Writing your thoughts and feelings in a journal can help you process emotions and track your healing progress.
- Create a Calming Routine: Build a daily routine that includes practices like meditation, deep breathing, prayer, or mindfulness.
- Set Healthy Boundaries: Be mindful about the conversations and environments you expose yourself to.
