Fees and Payment Options at Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania
Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania (PPWP) is committed to providing accessible healthcare. PPWP is here for you whether you have insurance or not. We offer a variety of low and no-cost programs to ensure you are able to receive the health care you deserve. Fees for services are based on your household income and may be free. If you are uninsured but don't qualify for free services through the sliding fee scale, you may be eligible for a reduced fee based on your income. You will not be turned away because of your inability to pay. We encourage you to bring proof of your income—such as pay stubs—to your appointment to make that process easier.
Methods of Payment
Our health centers accept cash, Visa, American Express, MasterCard, and Apple Pay. In order to use a check or credit card, you must show a valid photo ID.
Fees for Abortion Services
In-Clinic Abortion Services (Up to 18 weeks)
Dates are measured from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). To establish your date, see the Pregnancy Calculator. The cost of the procedure out of pocket can range from $640-$1,130 (as of 11/10/2025) based on how far along you are.
Insurance Coverage for In-Clinic Abortion
If you have insurance that you would like to bill for your abortion appointment, please provide all of your insurance details at time of scheduling. We will need your plan name, member ID, and the name, birthday, and relationship of the primary plan holder. Our team will check your insurance for coverage, and will call or message you with our findings. Please ensure your voicemail box is open to receive our message. Many insurance plans offer websites online where you can check coverage yourself, as well. You can also call your Member Services phone number, which is usually listed on the back of your insurance card.
Items we usually bill for:
- CPTs S0199, S0191, S0190 (for medication abortion)
- CPTs 59840 and 59841 (for procedural abortion)
We usually bill these under diagnosis code Z33.2 (encounter for elective termination of pregnancy).
Abortion Pill
Individuals 5+ to 10 weeks pregnant can use the abortion pill method. The cost for this process is $640. You should bring additional money to buy ibuprofen, Benadryl, anti-nausea medicine, Imodium AD, and/or prescription pain medication at the pharmacy. PPWP accepts most major insurance carriers and HMOs. PPWP accepts the following forms of payment: cash, money order, Apple Pay, MasterCard, American Express and VISA. PPWP offers limited financial assistance for both abortion methods. Call us at 412.562.1900 or 1.800.426.4636 to find out if we can help you!
Hormone Therapy
Many patients have questions about how much hormone therapy services will cost. Depending on your specific information, click below for more information about costs and insurance coverage. Rest assured that whatever your situation, Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania provides care to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We encourage patients to contact their plan -- either at the number located on the back of the card, or using the online portal for your health plan -- to access information on whether or not hormone therapy is covered. Another way to double check if you're covered is to get a copy of the Member Handbook for your plan. Different plans may call this document different things, but normally it will be on the lengthy side -- anywhere from 25 to 100 pages. Trans Health Project is a great resource for tips on what to look for to ensure your care is covered and that there are no surprise costs.
ICD-10 Diagnosis Codes for Hormone Therapy
Below are a list of ICD-10 diagnosis codes your provider may use:
- E34.9 Endocrine disorder, unspecified
- Z79.899 Other long term drug therapy
- F64.1 Gender identity disorder in adolescence and adulthood
- F64.8 Other gender identity disorders
- F64.9 Gender identity disorder, unspecified
- F64.0 Transsexualism
Note that while we don't like the wording used in many of these codes, they are used by insurers and medical billers on a national basis and we are unfortunately required to keep the wording the same when using them because of that. When being seen for hormone therapy, patients with insurance may owe copays such as the specialist copay listed on the card. Any in-office costs not covered by insurance will be reduced according to your income. In addition, some labs we may run, such as hemoglobin testing, testosterone or estrogen level checks, or basic metabolic panels, may be counted as diagnostic labs, which are subject to your plan's deductible. Your plan's Member Services team or online portal has information about what the deductible is for your plan and how much progress you have made toward paying it.
