Wellness and Seasonal Health Information
Respiratory illness season is here. If you haven’t gotten a flu shot, it’s still a great time to get one and protect yourself. An annual flu shot reduces your risk of contracting influenza and helps decrease the severity of illness if you do become sick with the flu.
Mental health is equally important during this time. About 5% of US adults experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a kind of depression that has them feeling more fatigued and disinterested in things they typically enjoy. The free Resilience Toolbox from Turning Point has online resources to help combat insomnia, express emotions and cultivate optimism.
Sleep Medicine Insights
Sleep problems are exceedingly common, especially this time of year. Sleep medicine specialist Saurav Luthra, MD, has tips for getting more and better sleep. Get answers to common questions like: How much melatonin is too much? And does it help to sleep in on the weekend?

Adapting Care During Health Challenges
Coronavirus hasn't stopped cancer surgeries in Kansas, but it's boosted telemedicine. Hospitals braced for an overflow of coronavirus patients, and many hospitals were literally overwhelmed with admissions. To free up beds to be able to care for these patients, and to preserve protective equipment, gowns, gloves, and masks, a quick shift to online consultations with doctors was implemented. Meanwhile, cancer treatment has gone forward almost the same as it had before, as hospitals handle the influx of patients while maintaining capacity for essential cancer surgery.
