Comprehensive Care and Genetic Counseling in High-Risk Pregnancies
Pregnancy is a remarkable journey, but for some expectant parents, it can come with added complexities and concerns. High-risk pregnancies—characterized by factors such as advanced maternal age, a family history of genetic conditions, or known risk factors—require specialized care to ensure the best outcomes for both mother and baby. Genetic counseling plays a crucial role in this process, providing personalized insights and support for families navigating these challenges.
Understanding the Importance of Genetic Counseling
Every pregnancy carries a baseline risk of genetic abnormalities, but for those with elevated risk factors, early assessment and guidance are essential. Genetic counseling helps families understand their unique situation, offering clarity on potential risks and empowering informed decision-making. At the High Risk Pregnancy Center, our certified, master’s-level genetic counselors are dedicated to providing the highest level of care with compassion and expertise.
A significant aspect of genetic counseling is education. Patients are guided through the purpose and scope of genetic tests, understanding both their benefits and limitations. Counselors explain the conditions being tested for, such as chromosomal abnormalities, inherited diseases, or other genetic risks. They also provide insights into inheritance patterns—whether dominant, recessive, or X-linked—to help families comprehend how a condition may be passed down. Additionally, patients learn about the potential impact of genetic findings, not only on themselves and their baby but also on their extended family.
Advanced Genetic Testing and Evaluation
The High Risk Pregnancy Center is proud to offer unparalleled genetic testing and screening. Our maternal fetal medicine (MFM) specialists utilize the most advanced technologies available, including state-of-the-art ultrasound techniques. These tools allow for early and accurate assessments of genetic risks, ensuring timely intervention when needed. Our team of certified physicians, sonographers, and genetic counselors work together seamlessly to provide a comprehensive approach to prenatal care.
Common conditions evaluated through genetic testing include:
- Chromosomal Abnormalities: Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 13, Trisomy 18
- Neural Tube Defects: Spina bifida
- Inherited Disorders: Cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anemia, Tay-Sachs disease, hemophilia, and muscular dystrophy
Direct Services and Pregnancy Support
The Pregnancy Help Centers provide confidential and nonjudgemental life-affirming services to abortion-vulnerable families regardless of the client's race, ethnicity, religion, marital or legal status. As a ministry of the Church, the Pregnancy Help Centers provide direct services through trained volunteers providing direct client advocacy services. All client services are free of charge, and therefore our centers rely on donations from parishes, schools, community groups, and individual donors.
For those facing an unplanned pregnancy, client advocates want to help you to make an educated, informed decision by exploring all of your options concerning you and your baby. In addition to counseling, centers often offer Educational Courses such as "Earn While You Learn" in the areas of pregnancy, parenting, and more.
What to Expect From An Early Ultrasound Scan
A fetal ultrasound, also called a sonogram, produces images of your baby in the womb by using high-frequency sound waves. Early ultrasounds are medical diagnostic procedures and are done in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy to show images of the baby’s early development stages. These routine ultrasound images are typically black and white and are detailed enough to show what we need to know about fetal growth.
There are two types of early ultrasounds: abdominal and vaginal. To prepare for transabdominal ultrasounds, we ask you to drink a few glasses of water a couple of hours before the procedure. This is because a full bladder helps the high frequency sound waves move more easily, to help provide a clear picture. This is a painless procedure and it usually takes about 20 minutes.

Risk Assessment and Personalized Insights
Genetic counseling involves a thorough evaluation of individual and family histories to assess genetic risks. Understanding factors such as advanced maternal age or a family history of genetic conditions is vital. For example, a 7-week old baby is just the size of a blueberry, but already has developed limb buds, outer ears, and nearly complete eyelids. By observing these images and utilizing advanced testing, doctors learn important information about your developing baby.
