Safe Holding and Positive Behaviour Management in Clinical Practice
Timian’s mission is to develop positive behaviour management strategies that enable staff to safely support people in crisis. Our focus is on understanding the underlying reasons behind challenging behaviours. This helps us defuse situations before they escalate and keep everyone safe.
Strategies for De-escalation and Crisis Prevention
In modern healthcare, the age-old wisdom of “prevention is better than cure” remains a fundamental principle, especially in addressing challenging behaviours and, most importantly, ensuring the safety of both patients and staff. We build supportive environments and reduce the need for restrictive interventions through communication and de-escalation. Our programmes train individuals to use proven communication and body language techniques to diffuse situations before they escalate, covering every interaction, from initial contact to debriefing post-incident.
Our evidence-based approach equips professionals with the skills and knowledge to make a measurable difference in crisis prevention, verbal de-escalation, and physical intervention. Safe holding techniques are utilised when de-escalation techniques or non-restrictive interventions are being considered as part of a holistic approach that empowers staff to build positive relationships and create safer environments for patients and colleagues.

Workplace Supervision and Clinical Development
High-quality workplace supervision is crucial for both professional and public safety. It is an integral part of healthcare for all levels of practice and supports continuous professional learning across the healthcare workforce. Advanced practice development requires an integrated, multi-professional approach to supervision. This ensures the maintenance of both patient and professional safety during the practitioner’s advanced practice development.
Supervision Framework and Standards
The practitioner progressing to advanced level practice requires workplace supervision which is responsive to individual learning and development needs. To facilitate this, the following arrangements are necessary:
- Each developing advanced practitioner should have a nominated Coordinating Education Supervisor to support them throughout the period of development.
- Practitioners should also have access to a variety of Associate Workplace Supervisors matched to specific learning or developmental needs across the four pillars of advanced practice.
- Supervisors must have access to learning and development opportunities, enabling them to provide effective supervision.
Key Components of Professional Practice
- Compliance: Ensuring your organisation is CQC compliant when it comes to restrictive interventions.
- Safety: Creating a safe and positive learning environment which is paramount to the success and well-being of every student and member of staff.
- Capabilities: Advanced practice consists of registrants from a range of professional backgrounds who have advanced level capabilities across the four pillars.
