Jabulani Safe-Hub: Sustainable Recreation Centre Design for Community Health and Wellness
AMANDLA developed the Safe-Hub model to address social needs through infrastructure. At its core, AMANDLA has always been driven by one goal: to create space for young people to feel safe, have fun, and – most importantly – to develop and realise their potential. The Safe-Hub has been AMANDLA’s primary platform for achieving these objectives.
Providing Sustainable Recreation and Wellness
Providing sustainable recreation centre design for community health and wellness is a core mission of the project. Specifically, the Jabulani Indoor Sports Hall Youth & Aquatic centre is a youth centre at Jabulani, Soweto, which was designed to serve the community. This is a building that complements the sports ground in Alex township in Johannesburg and provides opportunities for light entertainment, recreation and relaxation for the youth in the locality.
Facilities and Infrastructure
The Jabulani facility is comprehensive in its offering to the public. It has the following facilities: indoor multi-purpose sports hall; entertainment area; Digital library; training centre; computer room and workshop; pool changerooms, offices and ablutions. These components work together to let us transform your project idea into GREENING spaces.
| Facility Type | Specific Amenities Available |
|---|---|
| Sports & Aquatic | Indoor multi-purpose sports hall, pool changerooms |
| Education & Digital | Digital library, computer room and workshop, training centre |
| Social & Support | Entertainment area, offices and ablutions |
Holistic Support and Safety
The impact of these centers extends beyond physical activity. For instance, the Louwsburg Safe Hub provides a physically and emotionally safe space where young people can access quality after-school programmes, strong role models, and a range of services, opportunities and support. These spaces are essential for local development, as they are specifically designed to create space for young people to feel safe and realize their full potential within their own neighborhoods.
