Abortion Support: Doulas, Groups and Emotional Support
Abortion is a uniquely personal experience and like other major life events may come with a range of different emotions. Grief, relief, and anger are all normal yet challenging feelings that may require some support to process. While many people are most comfortable going through their abortion experience alone, others may find that having the care and company of friends, family, or an abortion doula makes things easier to handle.
Understanding Support Options
Whether you’re considering, recovering from, or about to have an abortion, support is available to you. Sharing and getting the support you need and deserve is essential in processing your experience and supporting others in their experiences and feelings. This safe and nonjudgmental group is designed for those who have received abortion(s) to confidentially connect with others who have gone through similar experiences. Whether you have thought about it for a while, have recently been feeling stuck, or are just beginning to think your experience through, this group is for you.
Professional Psychotherapy Support
The support and process psychotherapy group runs annually at the start of January. Eight consecutive meetings facilitated by a licensed psychotherapist are held on Thursdays from 7:00pm - 8:30pm on a HIPAA compliant video platform. Members are expected to attend all eight sessions. The therapist is in-network with BC/BS PPO, Aetna, and UHC (no EAPs or Medicaid). Self-pay is accepted. Space is limited and requires interview with the therapist prior to joining.
Community and Peer-Led Gatherings
We are here to provide a confidential, non-judgmental space for you to share and express your feelings, which may range from empowerment, relief, grief, anxiety, guilt, sadness, happiness, and beyond. This group is not about the political or religious debate around abortion, but rather about supporting you in your post-abortion experience. You are not alone. It is donation-based with a suggested donation of $20 (venmo or cash at the gathering). Do not let the donation be a barrier to coming - all are welcome.
The Role of Abortion Doulas
An abortion doula has specialized training in providing physical and emotional support during a surgical or medical abortion procedure. Doulas aren’t medical professionals but they’ve got much to offer those looking for a little more support and connection during what can be a really overwhelming time! Doulas can also provide information and education or direct you to the nurse or doctor for medical advice. During your procedure, your doula might hold your hand, offer a heating pad for pain or cramping, or offer thoughtful conversation about your procedure.

Supporting Others
People who’ve had an abortion or are considering an abortion deserve love, compassion, and respect. If you’re reaching out to help someone in need of abortion support, let them tell you what they need. Ask them what would make them feel most supported and loved. Reassure them that you’re available to them.
