Facility Infrastructure and the Women & Infants Project

With over 1,200 beds, UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, is the eighth-largest hospital in the country. The UAB Women & Infants project is a 60,000-square-foot buildout of the eighth floor, including construction of 59 inpatient beds with two supporting nurse stations, a physical therapy and observation unit, administration areas, and four additional rooftop units with structural steel supports. The additional beds accommodate the continued growth and demand for inpatient services. This project also expands facilities for its bone marrow transplant and cell therapy service.

The construction process was highly efficient. Hoar coordinated with the steel contractor and structural engineer to redesign the steel into pre-fabricated, pre-welded components which reduced the two-week install to four days. Overall the project was completed two months ahead of the contracted schedule and with $1 million in added scope changes.

Digital Care Journeys for Gynecology

UAB Medicine Deploys Digital Care Journeys for Gynecology to Optimize Enhanced Recovery Program (ERP). In 2018 UAB Medicine, one of the top academic medical centers in the United States, partnered with SeamlessMD, a leading Digital Care Journey platform, to augment their strategy by digitally engaging and monitoring patients undergoing gynecology oncology surgery. UAB believed that a Digital Patient Engagement platform would better standardize the delivery of ERP patient education, improve patient compliance with ERP protocols and automate the collection of ERP-related Patient-reported Outcomes (PROs).

By digitally engaging gynecology patients through a mobile and web-enabled app, patients are self-guided from pre-admission preparation through post-discharge recovery with evidence-based ERP gynecology pathways. This digital transformation has resulted in a reduction of 30-day readmission rates by 50%.

Emergency Department Expansion

As UAB Hospital’s average daily census continued to increase, leadership recognized the need to renovate and expand their emergency department operations. Brewco Health partnered with Mobile Healthcare Facilities to design, fabricate, and maintain two fully-equipped mobile emergency units for the hospital. BMG converted two 53’ double expandable trailers into over 2,000 square feet of emergency department space to continue providing patients the same level of care during renovations.
