Uterine Artery/Fibroid Embolization (UAE/UFE) for Patients with Fibroids
UAE is a new, non-surgical treatment for fibroids. Fibroids are non-cancerous masses that can grow in many layers of the uterus. Depending on where they are growing they can push on different organs and cause different symptoms. Symptoms often include pelvic, abdominal, and back pain, bloating and cramping.
The Advanced UAE Procedure
The entire procedure is done through a small catheter, like an IV, which is inserted in the wrist. The small catheter is placed near the fibroids and tiny beads cause the fibroid to shrink. Small beads directly target fibroids using x-ray guidance. This means just the fibroids shrink without effecting the rest of the uterus. You walk out after the procedure with a small bandage over the wrist and no incisions.
Recovery and Expectations
The procedure was quick, and the recovery wasn’t bad at all. Some numbing medicine is used at the very start of the procedure, which stings for a second, but after that most of the procedure is painless or has very little pain. There is slight discomfort after the procedure but you should improve quickly and can manage with ice and sometimes some over the counter medications.
- How long will it take to feel relief? Every patient is different. Some feel some relief within a few days but can take several weeks.
- How often can I have this done? Usually this treatment is only needed one time.
- What about follow-up? Every person is different and it’s important to keep your follow up visit to discuss if repeating a procedure ever becomes necessary.
