Dublin Well Woman Centre: Dealing with an Unplanned Pregnancy
If you find yourself suddenly facing an unplanned pregnancy, you may feel many different emotions—fear, loneliness, panic, and distress. We know that many women find it hard to discuss an unplanned or crisis pregnancy with their partner, family or friends until they know how they themselves feel about the pregnancy. This can be very isolating, and can leave you feeling alone and vulnerable at a time when you may most need the support of your loved ones.
Unplanned or Crisis Pregnancy Counselling
By coming to a Dublin Well Woman Centre clinic for pregnancy counselling, you will have the chance to discuss all of your options – abortion, adoption and parenting – in a non-directive counselling session with one of our experienced counsellors. Non-directive pregnancy counselling means that the counsellor will not offer any opinion as to what may be best for you. Instead, she is there to provide a safe and completely confidential space for you to explore your own feelings around your pregnancy, and the options you feel are open to you.
Regarding these services:
- Our Crisis Pregnancy and Post-Abortion Counselling services are provided free of charge.
- You may also wish to download our Unplanned Pregnancy Counselling leaflet.
Early Medical Abortion
An abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy, and has been available in the Dublin Well Woman Centre since January 2019. A woman may choose to have an early medical abortion for a range of different reasons; our staff are non-judgemental and will support you in the procedure in a safe environment. In Well Woman we are now offering the Early Medical Abortion service as a hybrid or an in-clinic model.
To understand the process, please note that the first consultation can be done either via telemedicine, and you MUST attend the clinic for the 2nd consultation, at which the medication is supplied. This service is available free of charge to women living in the Republic of Ireland.
Pregnancy Testing and Support Services
Pregnancy testing is available in all Well Woman medical centres. The test requires you to provide a urine sample after you have come into our centre. After this, one of our nurses or doctors will advise you of the result. Pregnancy testing is free to holders of valid medical cards in our Coolock centre, only.
For additional support, My Options is a HSE freephone line that provides free and confidential information and counselling to people experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. It provides information and counselling Monday to Friday (9am to 9pm) and Saturdays (10am to 2pm) and provides medical advice 24/7. You can access this service by calling 1800 828 010.
