Our contraceptive clinic provides various birth control options, including IUDs, jadelles, contraceptive pills, injections, condoms, and emergency contraception, ensuring you have a diverse selection to meet your specific needs.
Our Contraceptive Clinic
Clinics are held at our Isle Street practice on Wednesday mornings. People of any age can get contraception from our clinic. If you need contraception for the first time, want a repeat prescription, think there may be a better option for you, or need emergency contraception, come and talk with our clinic. You do not need to be enrolled with us to visit.
Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
Regarding specific options, an IUD is a type of long-acting reversible contraception that goes in your uterus. There are two types of IUD: the copper IUD and the hormonal IUD (Mirena or Jaydess). Additionally, the Jadelle is a type of long-acting reversible contraception implanted into your upper arm.

Booking and Pre-Insertion Requirements
Please schedule a pre-insertion appointment with your team nurse for further information and advice before scheduling the IUD insertion or the Jadelle implantation. To visit the Contraceptive Clinic, if your appointment is for a new long acting reversible contraceptive device, you must have an initial appointment with a Nurse. This pre-insertion appointment can be made with any nurse and you can book via Manage My Health or on the phone with reception.
Note: IUD removal appointments and Jadelle removal appointments do not require a pre-removal appointment with a nurse. Booking tip: not all clinicians are able to offer IUD insertions and removals, the best way to ensure you get the right appointment is to book into our contraceptive clinic, call our reception team on 03 441 0500.
Funding and Subsidised Services
Government funding schemes can be available for patient safety and care. Funded appointments are available for enrolled patients under 22 yrs and/or up to 50yrs, with a community services card, High User Card or of Māori or Pacific ethnicity. Depending on government funding schemes available, consultations may be free for some enrolled patients. Please check with your clinician when you book whether you qualify for a free consultation. You will need to pre-pay for the clinic prior to visiting, our team will inform you if you are eligible for subsidised fees.

Queenstown Sexual Health Clinic is a specialist service offering confidential sexual health advice and support, including diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV and other related conditions.
