New Birthing Centers and Innovative Care in Federal Way
Two new birthing centers in Federal Way are expanding innovative access to care. The Family Birth Center at St. Francis Hospital is part of a $20.5 million investment by VMFH to enhance maternal and neonatal care and increase overall hospital capacity. Separately, the Federal Way Birth Center (FWBC) became the first freestanding community birth center in the state of Washington to be owned and operated by a Black midwife.
Advanced Care Initiatives
At St. Francis, they participate in the statewide initiative to use a TeamBirth approach. Instead of a game of telephone between the many individuals supporting the birthing parent, TeamBirth centers patients in all health care decisions made throughout labor, delivery and postpartum. Another program at St. Francis is the blue band initiative, which focuses on implementing practices to prevent maternal deaths from preeclampsia and hypertension by clearly identifying patients that may need more specialized care.
The following table summarizes the key facilities and their specializations:
| Facility Name | Location | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| St. Francis Family Birth Center | Federal Way, WA | Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), TeamBirth approach |
| Federal Way Birth Center | Federal Way, WA | Owned and operated by a Black midwife; community-focused |
| Valley Women’s Health | Utah (Over 10 locations) | Comprehensive Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Med Spa services |
| All Women’s Health | Federal Way, WA | Specialized abortion care, wellness, and sedation services |
Patient Rights and Legal Protections
In Washington State, you have the legal right to decide to stay pregnant or to have an abortion, even if you are under age 18. You also have a legal right to keep your abortion choices confidential (private) from a parent, spouse, partner or anyone else. We are committed to delivering the best quality of care and treating all patients with respect, empathy, and dignity.
Patient Experiences
Our commitment to a non-judgmental environment is reflected in the feedback from those we serve. As one patient, Ashley C., noted: "This is the most comfortable clinic I have ever been to. The staff was so nice and non-judgmental environment." Another patient, May L., shared: "The kindness just radiates from everyone there. They have an amazing way of making you feel so comfortable and cared for."
