Women's Leadership and Cultural Etiquette in Dubai
The glass ceiling preventing women from advancing in their careers is “outdated,” according to Dubai Business Women Council (DBWC) president Dr Raja Al Gurg. Speaking at the council’s event on women in leadership, Dr Al Gurg said DBWC is focusing more on the increasing number of opportunities “being flung open for women” and the “incredible panache with which women around the world are rising to new challenges.”
Strategies for Visionary Female Leadership
To achieve progress, “we need to reflect on strategies, not barriers, and our regular panels provide an important platform for facilitating bold action towards achieving gender balance across all industries.” The urgent need to support and unlock the potential of women in both a personal and professional manner is something we keep at the forefront of everything we do at Dubai Business Women Council. Furthermore, as Stephanie McMahon noted, role models “inspire both women and girls to be confident and strong” as they share the joint belief that women all over the world deserve the same respect as their male counterparts.
The event addressed steps being taken to break down the stereotypes of Arab women, particularly in sport and other typically male-dominated industries, and underlined the council’s role in stimulating proactive thinking and visionary female leadership. We encourage society to be fearless in challenging the stereotypical bias faced by women.
Understanding the Dubai Dress Code
Dubai is a unique city that attracts tourists from all over the world with its luxury, modernity and amazing attractions. However, Dubai is also a place where it is important to remember the culture and traditions of the United Arab Emirates, especially when it comes to dress. The basic rule of fashion for women in Dubai is a balance between comfort and respect for the local culture. A female tourist's attire should be chosen according to the situation and location she finds herself in.
Practical Attire Guidelines
- General Public Places: In most public places, outfits that cover the shoulders and knees are preferred, but in private places or on beaches, standards are more flexible.
- Malls and Souks: When visiting various attractions in Dubai, such as the popular shopping malls or traditional souks, it is advisable to ensure you have appropriate clothing that allows you to feel comfortable but also respect local norms.
- Religious Sites: In the city's traditional neighbourhoods and religious sites - such as mosques - a modest dress code applies.
- Beach and Pool: You can wear a bikini on Dubai's beaches, but please note that this is not allowed in public areas, except in special areas designated for relaxation.
- Fabric Choices: In Dubai's hot climate, the best choice will be lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen or viscose.
The dress code in the UAE aims to harmoniously blend tradition and modernity, making this city unique. Dressing a tourist in Dubai is a combination of elegance, comfort and the ability to adapt to the environment.
